Tips for tax season: Health insurance mandate

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation provides tips and reminders – for tax preparers and for do-it-yourself taxpayers – on how to fill out Rhode Island personal income tax returns when it comes to the health insurance mandate.

Identity theft, UI fraud, Form 1099-G

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation suggests steps to take if you have been a victim of identity theft. The Division recommends two separate series of steps, depending on the type of identity theft involved:

  • The first involves identity theft in general, including tax-related identity theft.
  • The second involves identity theft related to unemployment benefits and Form 1099-G.

Executive Order extension

Rhode Island Governor Gina M. Raimondo has extended Executive Order 20-02, declaring a state of emergency due to the dangers to health and life posed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. 

This Executive Order will remain in full force and effect until March 17, 2021, unless renewed, modified, or terminated by subsequent Executive Orders. For more information, click here.

Executive Order extension

Rhode Island Governor Gina M. Raimondo has extended an Executive Order involving the “Rhode Island Qualified Jobs Incentive Act of 2015” program, under Rhode Island General Laws Chapter 44-48.3. The extended Executive Order will remain in effect until March 11, 2021 (unless renewed, modified or terminated by subsequent Executive Order).

Filing season now open

Rhode Island’s tax-filing season is now open.

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation today officially began accepting and processing Rhode Island resident and nonresident personal income tax returns for the 2020 tax year.

New email scam targets tax professionals

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation, the Internal Revenue Service, and other members of the Security Summit warn tax professionals about a new scam email that impersonates the IRS and attempts to steal Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs).

The Security Summit partners said the latest scheme, arriving just before the official start of the tax-filing season, should serve as another reminder that tax professionals remain prime targets for identity thieves. For more information, click here.

Latest declaratory ruling

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation has posted its latest declaratory ruling. Ruling No. 2021-01 was issued after a taxpayer requested a determination regarding the application of sales factor sourcing rules to certain business corporation tax transactions.

List of approved software vendors

The Rhode Island Division of Taxation reminds tax preparers to check the Division's list of approved software vendors. Preparers can use the handy online list to see if their tax-preparation software package has been cleared by the Division for the current tax-filing season. Governor extends Executive Order

Rhode Island Governor Gina M. Raimondo recently extended an Executive Order involving unemployment insurance matters (including relief for employers related to unemployment insurance tax charges).
